After a brief stint at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the New York Islanders are relocating back to Long Island.
The NHL team will build its own 18,000-seat venue on the grounds next to Belmont Park. New York Arena Partners, a development team which includes the Islanders and the owners of the New York Mets, will spend $1 billion to build the arena, a 435,000-square-foot retail hub, and a hotel.
Groundbreaking is expected in 2018, with construction completed by 2020.
Islanders ownership has said they are committed to play at Barclays Centers through the 2018-2019 season. However, some stakeholders are advocating the Islanders move back to Nassau Coliseum while the new arena is being built.
Long Island Rail Road service to Belmont Park will expand once the arena opens.
